Mythorealism

"When Myth Incarnates in the Waking World"

Hello everyone,

I have not been participating very much on this forum lately, but that is largely because my free time has been devoted to a major project- the official opening of Brass Window Books, a micro-press dedicated to Mythorealist fiction, poetry and philosophy. As it says on our website: “Brass Window Books is dedicated to publishing books that, in our judgment, are uncommon, unconventional, and unexpected; books that are strange, surprising, singular and significant; unique books that push the boundaries of mind, matter, and myth.”

In connection with the opening of Brass Window Books, I have completely redesigned the Mythorealism website:

http://www.mythorealism.com/

I have also redesigned my own author website:

http://www.noctiviganti.com/

Brass Window Books has a site of its own:

http://www.brasswindow.com/index.html

Brass Window has two books available in paperback form: Prayers for Nothing by C.S. Thompson and The Red Dance by Lani Thompson. Here is what John Grant, co-editor of the Encyclopedia of Fantasy, has to say about The Red Dance:

"Every so often a fantasy comes along that's so much at the cutting edge, that's so unbelievably individual, that's so much what fantasy literature ought to be all about -- that's so just plain out-and-out good, in other words -- that it's virtually impossible to review. This short novel -- probably no more than 25-30,000 words -- is a prime example. Somewhere within the confines of a mythology and pantheon that seem to bear no clear relation to any existing ones, various characters from lofty to lowly enact ventures whose purpose is not immediately clear to the reader rooted in our reality... All of these events are described in the most vibrant manner possible. Paragraph after paragraph stuns the inner senses. The temptation to read the text slowly out loud, even if only to an empty room, is almost irresistible. The vividness of the coloration of Thompson's prose really must be experienced to be believed. The Red Dance is a small but superbly shaped jewel, but it's not one you can appreciate with just a glance: you have to study it, touch it, feel it, experience it."

Prayers for Nothing is a book of poems and essays, exploring the concept of Mythorealism in verse and prose. To read Prayers for Nothing for free online, you can visit this website:

http://www.noctiviganti.com/prayersfornothing.html

Both Prayers for Nothing and The Red Dance are available in paperback for $9.95 each, or in e-book format as a free download. In addition, The Modern Gnosis by C.S. Thompson is also available as a free download. From the Brass Window website:

“The world we live in is the world of magic, and the living power of myth and mysticism are all around us in our art and literature, in the ethical choices we all make on a daily basis and even in our most basic experiences of fundamental reality. This is the philosophy of Mythorealism, a new viewpoint for the modern world- spontaneous, imaginative and free of doctrines, a direct path to the spiritual insight of the modern gnosis. While the essays and poetry of Prayers for Nothing are the perfect introduction to Mythorealism, The Modern Gnosis takes the reader further, with an in-depth philosophical discussion of the Mythorealist perspective on aesthetics, ethics and metaphysics.”

I hope you enjoy what Brass Window Books has to offer!

Thank you, Alchemistra!
I would love to see your friend's work, so please encourage him to post some of it here. Brass Window is tiny, so possibly your friend would be better served by finding a larger publisher, but if his work is in the Mythorealist vein then we would love to get to know him.

Chris,
Congratulations on your wonderful achievements! I will be sure to check out all the new sites have to offer. How wonderful that you and your family can work concomitantly towards a common goal. It all sounds very exciting. Thank you for bringing the e-books to our attention. I know that I will want to peruse them all.

Actually, I know someone who has written a fantasy story of the Mythorealist-type. It is an incredibly story, richly detailed, with an epic fantasy backdrop. Upon reading it myself, my mouth was agape at how beautiful and poignantly the story develops. I will email the writer and suggest he post a preview here if you believe that it might be something worth previewing. Or if Brass Window is not interested, perhaps you could suggest another publisher for this gentleman's very fine work.

Regrettably, I too have not posted anything for a very long time. Life keeps getting in the way. Nonetheless, I have derived much pleasure from my exposure to Mythorealism and from reading the wonderful works of fiction posted here, and the books that you have published. I am looking forward to future books from the Noctiviganti series, as I thoroughly enjoyed the first two books in the series, A Season of Strange Dreams, and And Then the Night. Both books to me were an incredible descent into a world of dark magic and mayhem, with characters who seemed to border between utter lucidity and periodic mania. Both excellent examples of everything noir fiction should be!

Again, congratulations...and I will keep in touch for the latest developments on Mythorealism
